None of my students remember being taught to organize their thoughts and write a thoughtfully-structured essay. Though explanations exist, they’re irrelevant. All that matters is the stress of trying to write a paper without knowing how to move through the process, or what it’s supposed to look like when it’s done.
The good news: Everyone can learn new skills when they are supported, engaged, and thoughtfully challenged.
My encouraging approach leverages learners’ natural aptitudes, helping them move through their challenges. My students plan for projects by breaking complex tasks into small steps that foster success. Through a dynamic questioning process, I coach them to develop their ideas and opinions. My fail-safe rules about writing structure guide writers to articulate and substantiate an argument. In the final stages, revision and editing sharpens their skills as critical readers of their own work.
For the past ten years—as a private organization and writing coach, as a high school writing instructor, and as a professor of writing—my personalized approach has turned perplexed and self-conscious scribblers into confident and accomplished writers.
"I have a list of over thirty tutors who work on writing and organization, and Jane is the first person who comes to mind when one of my students needs tutoring. Jane is able to help students with all forms of writing and skill building; she has made tremendous progress with our students. Even as Jane holds challenged students to high standards, she is gently and compassionately building their self-esteem. Jane is in constant contact with parents and with me. She is generous and gracious with her time, and she goes above and beyond in helping our students. Jane is extremely talented in seeing what is needed and in figuring out ways to make students succeed. She is also completely responsible, reliable, and professional in all aspects of her work. In short, she is an outstanding tutor.”

“Jane began working with our daughter as a tutor, and became a mentor. In addition to teaching how to organize and pace assignments better, Jane also helped our daughter think in ways that truly allowed her to find her own voice. She now comes to writing with enthusiasm instead of anxiety. (And that has reduced our stress as well.) Jane takes care to show a path and to tease out ideas versus insert too many of her own. The icing on the cake: our daughter’s English teacher was “blown away” by her work, and encouraged her to pursue higher-level writing courses. As a parent, I also have appreciated Jane’s holistic approach; she sees parents as partners and communicates with us clearly and often, even as she has developed a positive relationship, based on respect and accountability, directly with our daughter.” –Parent of Student
“We are thrilled with our son’s improved writing and organizational skills.Jane has been crucial in the development of his ability to order his thought processes, craft outlines, and expand on ideas in his writing. His grades have improved significantly and his standardized test scores reflect the same upward curve. Most importantly, Jane has helped him understand his strengths and weaknesses and how to work effectively with these. He established a firm rapport with her in a short time, and felt enthusiastic about working on his writing. Jane is reliable and professional, and takes time to communicate with parents on a regular basis. We feel blessed to have had the opportunity to work with a coach of her caliber.”

Ms. Buchbinder has spent many hours working with her on writing strategies; the results have been impressive and our daughter’s confidence has grown immeasurably. Ms. Buchbinder approaches all aspects of her work with a thoughtful and compassionate acumen; she consistently demonstrates dedication and creativity in her exceptional academic support. The wonderful rapport Ms. Buchbinder built with our daughter speaks to her ability to connect with students and effectively address individual needs.”
